OUR MISSION
Can't Sit Still uses creativity and culture to disrupt social inequalities; inspiring individuals, connecting communities and spreading joy.
We have a strong set of company values, that are the beating heart of the charity:

OUR PAY POLICY
Can't Sit Still is built on a foundation of 'structure, not hierarchy'. To reflect this, and in line with our core value of disruptive generosity, we operate a flat pay structure for all employees or long term freelancers (band B).
There are three pay bands at Can’t Sit Still:
Band A
This is the lowest rate that would be paid to an intern, for example, who is working with us through an official interning scheme, such as Kickstart. It is particularly relevant where the main purpose of the employment is to develop the skills and experience of the person involved. This will never be below the National Living Wage.
Band B (from 2024-25) - £29,120 per annum plus benefits, or £172 per day freelance.
This is the company rate of pay, offered to all long term freelancers or employees of Can’t Sit Still. This includes performers, company manager, artistic director, creatives, marketing manager and producer.
Please see here to find out how we work out our freelance rates.
Band C
This band is for freelancers with whom we need to work on a short term basis to complete a specific task/piece of work. They dictate their own rate of pay, which is up to CSS to accept or decline. This rate is normally determined by the industry in which they normally work (i.e. accountancy).

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
In line with our value of 'radical care', Can’t Sit Still is committed to doing everything we can to minimise our negative impact on the planet. We are keen to work with artists, partners, venues and other stakeholders to implement good practice measures whenever possible and practical. We welcome discussion and feedback about how we improve the environmental sustainability of our work and practices.
Our Work:
We recycle, re-use or redistribute old sets and costumes.
We work with our stakeholders to encourage and support each other to change behaviours which are out of date and out of tune with the planet.
We often make food to share and discourage use of plastic in the rehearsal room and on set.
We make shows that are adaptable and can work in less traditional spaces often on a ‘low tech needs’ basis.
Our Travel:
We ensure that use of transport is carefully considered and limited to essential trips only.
Public transport, walking and bicycles are used whenever possible.
We are investigating carbon off-setting our touring mileage.
Our Office Systems:
We use of online tools such as Zoom for meetings.
We use of remote working practices within our team, using cloud storage systems, online tools and the good ole’ phone to organise our business.
We are making a plan to remove out of date and redundant computer files systematically as we know that we rely too much on big, power hungry servers.
We are auditing our suppliers to assess their green credentials, and are moving towards using only ethically sound businesses to supply services to us.
Venues: Our Environmental Rider
We recognise that we are all trying hard to make sustainable changes. Our experience shows that by asking good questions we can encourage our partners to consider their interactions with us and others, and potentially support them to make changes too. We expect the same challenge back from our colleagues and welcome ideas to improve our sustainability. It is in this spirit of mutual support that we ask our venues to consider the following:
- Is the size of your print request appropriate for the show we are bringing? Are there distribution channels in place to make best use of the print we provide? Can we minimise paper waste together?
- We love meeting our colleagues in person. However, let’s check together whether a meeting is essential and, if not, let’s find a travel-free solution that works for all of us.
- Thanks for any drinks you might provide for us. We will always bring our own bottles and re-usable cups so you don’t need to supply us with anything in plastic bottles.
- Do you have any top tips of great accommodation close to your venue? We like to stay in BnB’s nearby and ideally with local hosts who have a relationship with your venue. Hotels tend to consume big quantities of power and plastic which we’d prefer to avoid.
- Do you have any recommendations for vegetarian / vegan food suppliers nearby? Again, particularly great if they’re of the local home-grown kind so we can invest in your local economy while we are with you.

In the spirit of disruptive generosity, our policies are publicly available on our Google Drive. We welcome feedback on where we can strengthen these and examples of best practice from others. If you'd like to discuss these with us, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
